#harshtag Olongapo City has waged an all-out war against Mickey Mouse and friends in an effort to prevent another leptospirosis outbreak which put Olongapo in the headlines last year. 2013 was definitely a year to remember for Olongapo for two quite contrasting reasons. One, because it saw the crowning of beauty Queens Angelee Claudett delos Reyes (Miss Philippines Earth 2013) and Megan Lynne Young (Miss World 2013), who both hail from the city that now prides itself as home of the most beautiful women in the world. Its interesting to note that shortly after getting global attention for producing world-class beauties, Olongapo City plunged headfirst into the news for being home of the deadliest rodents in the world. The city earned this notoriety after it registered the most cases of leptospirosis and the most number of casualties from the said disease in the country. And thats what spawned this frantic, if not almost comic, campaign of putting bounty on a pests head and tagging it as citys most wanted. It is as if the local government distances itself from blame and points its accusing finger on the usual suspects. Last years unprecedented outbreak was a result of many circumstances and must never be imputed solely on the fact that rats are carriers of disease-causing viruses. Last years epidemic was a matter of mismanagement, a matter of ill-preparedness. Information drives were scarce and ineffective. Lack of facilities and medical supply also play critical factors. This kind of crusade brings to mind the classic stupidity displayed by PNP in its recommendation to ban the selling of hammers inside malls to preempt operations of Martilyo Gang. Such kind of thinking supposes that we also ban the use of motorcycles to eliminate crimes committed by riding-in-tandems. Or why dont we just ban elections so we could finally get rid of our honorable pests that wreak greater havoc in society? Which brings me to the point I would like to drive home. We have deadlier rats inside the City Hall that we must wipe out completely. These rats prove to be resilient as they have survived one administration to another. If the Paulino administration is serious about hunting down deadly little creatures that crawl along the dark alleys of our city, why then does it keep bigger and greedier pests inside its offices? These pests do not only carry dreadful disease, they are disease themselves. They are the ones who deserve hunting.
