has just seen Robocop and to be honest, it is a surprisingly entertaining sci-fi action flick. While it is not as great of a film as the original 1987 film, it is decent enough where it successfully stands on its own two feet. I will admit, when I seen the first trailer for the movie I quickly dismissed it. However, this Robocop respects the original. Jose Padilha does an excellent job directing this remake. He adds a special touch to this film and he has a good keen sense of action and how it should take place. He uses this version of Robocop as a canvas and he is truly the artist, crafting entertaining action sequences and focusing deeper on the man inside the machine. His direction is so well here, that I am looking forward to his next directorial effort. Most of you have seen the original Robocop so you know about most of the social commentary and underlying themes presented in the film. Screenwriter Joshua Zetumer pays his respects to the original while putting his own spin on things. He addresses most of the same issues that were in the 1987 screenplay written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner but what I like most about his screenplay is that we really get to know the man inside the machine. I felt like we get to know truly who Alex Murphy was before he was transformed into the strong arm of the law. This is one thing that I felt lacked in the original. What is good about Zetumers screenplay is that you can interpret it from many different angles and it will still seem plausible in the end. The cinematography is very impressive and Lula Carvalho does an excellent job. Carvalho places us right into the action and at times, you feel like you are Robocop. The point-of-view shots are very well done and it is as if you are given an in-depth look into a scientific experiment and its effects on society. One thing I did notice is that the way the film is shot, it is obviously catered to the video game generation. At times, Robocop feels like it is adapted from a videogame which is not a bad thing. The acting in this movie is pretty good and Joel Kinnaman gives a very convincing performance as Alex Murphy a.k.a. Robocop. You are able to see layers of his humanity and he handles the material better than Peter Weller did. Reflecting on the original Robocop, I realized that Weller was not given enough material to work with and since he spent most of the time as a robot, you really did not get to see a range of emotions from him. Gary Oldman is superb in his role and he represents the films moral fiber. Michael Keaton does a good job as well and he fits perfectly into the film. They are backed by a supporting cast that includes Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Jay Baruchel, Michael K. Williams and Samuel L. Jackson. What I liked most about Robocop is seeing the various homages to the original. Like the original, this 2014 version touches on alot of important themes. Themes on societys ever-growing dependence on technology, playing God, police corruption and humanity are handled in a mature way. Above all, Robocop shows us that you can be stripped of everything you ever had. However, never lose your soul in the process.
