he President General, League of Imams and Alfas in the South West, Edo and Delta states, Sheik Musthapha Ajisafe, is dead. Nigerian Tribune was informed by a family source that Ajisafe, a Islamic cleric and scholar, passed on at the age of 87 around 11.00 pm, on Monday, after he had paid visits to some relatives in Osogbo, his home town where he lived until his death. Ajisafe, who was revered for his vast knowledge and inspiring sermon in the Islamic world, was also until his death, the Chief Imam of Osogboland and leader of all Muslims in the South West geopolitical zone, including Edo and Delta states. Though, details surrounding his death was still sketchy as of the time of this report, credible source informed our correspondent that he died after he observed his prayers and retired to his bedroom. Nigerian Tribune reliably gathered that the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubarkar, is expected to lead other Islamic leaders from across the country to the deceased funeral programme, while his remains are expected to be interred today (Wednesday), at his family house, Arikalamu compound, in Osogbo, after prayers session at the Osogbo city stadium in the morning. Reacting over his death, the Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, described Ajisafe’s demise as a big loss to the entire Muslim community in Osun state and Nigeria in general. In a condolence message by his Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, the governor observed that the deceased was a cleric of repute, whose contributions to the search for peace in the state and the country remain outstanding. According to Aregbesola, “the death of Sheikh Ajisafe is a big loss to the Muslim Ummah in Osogbo as well as the entire state because he preached peace and unity while alive. His preaching at home and his gospel of Islamic scholarship will be missed.” Similarly, the Osun state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a statement signed by its chairman, Alhaji Ganiyu Olaoluwa described Ajisafe’s demise as a colossal loss to all Muslims in the entire South West, Edo and Delta states, lamenting that his wealth of experience and commitment to peace among all religious faiths would be missed by all.
