hello everyone today we met with DOSW to discuss on the ban of outside food inside the hostel rooms. after a rigorous discussion for about 1 hour, they were not convinced to revoke the ban. as i have stated earlier that we will not go down without a fight i welcome any type of ideas on this issue from all of you. just so you know the basis for the banishment, i am writing the conversation (an overview) between the SAC and DOSW(along with associate deans). i ask you to go through the conversation before you comment your idea or view. here it goes..(i have omitted courtesy titles) SAC: what is the basis for the banishment? DOSW: few days before, some students were caught smuggling some food carriages in to a hostel. so we have banned these type of activities. SAC: how is ordering the food from outside smuggling? DOSW: the vendor from whom those carriages were ordered does not have any permission to supply food to students. so that is an illegal activity and hence smuggling. SAC: so why is the banishment on food from all the other restaurants? DOSW: we do not have any control over the quality check-up of food from outside restaurants so we had to ban all of them except dominos which is a reputed restaurant for its quality. SAC: but then you dont have control over the quality check-up of dominos also. DOSW: ok then if you say so, we will ban ordering food from dominos also! *sensing the chance of backfiring, we changed the topic from dominos* DOSW: we have received many complaints from students who fell ill by taking outside food but blamed the institute mess for it. we want to make sure that this doesnt occur in future. SAC: but again students may take outside food by walking to the restaurants and if they fall ill, they may blame the mess food even then! how will the banishment prevents this from happening? DOSW: as you know we are installing the biometrics in all the messes. if any student falls ill and blames mess food without even going to mess, we will have the proof. SAC: the system of ordering food from outside restaurants has been in place for a long time and we couldnt quote any instance under which one student has blamed the mess for his illness. so why is this change now all of a sudden? because any rule is made from experiences and the instances which demand that rule to be made. can you tell us any such instance which prompted you to make this rule and was proved? *the reply to this question was mind-blowing* DOSW: i will tell you an example. a person drinks and drives daily from his office to home for 30 years without meeting with an accident even once. so can you say that drink and driving is safe? SAC: sir, this is in no way relates to our issue! DOSW: no, you try to understand us. we dont want to take any risks from now on. we would care less about the systems prevalent in past if we have a better solution to the problems. *after so much time in vain trying to explain that the system prevalent was not posing any problems rather the new system is, we changed the argument* SAC: most of the students order non-veg from outside restaurants because it is not being served in any mess except rajendra, so it should be the right of the student to eat whatever he wants and if a restaurant is ready to provide the service of delivery, who are we to deny that right? DOSW: as you know we have started non-veg in mess and we are ready to start in all other messes also. as soon as we receive approval from bhawan and mess council of any bhawan we will start the service immediately after making necessary arrangements. SAC: but again isnt it imposing restrictions on students to eat non-veg on some particular day only? shouldnt the student enjoy the right to what to eat and when to eat? DOSW: student can always go outside and eat whatever he likes, whenever he likes. we are just not allowing that inside the campus. *at this point ADOSW gave an idea that they will allow the delivery at the main gate and whoever wants to order food, can collect it at the main gate. this idea was discredited by DOSW himself and so we didnt even get to counter that idea. after the exchange of words for some more time, the discussion shifted towards the problem of dogs!* DOSW: students order the food from outside and throw the wastage everywhere and dogs create a mess out of that waste and are creating a lot of problems. SAC: so shouldnt the steps to be taken by administration be towards decreasing the dog population inside the campus rather than cutting off the source of food to the animals? DOSW: no, whatever you say the decision has been taken and you have to abide by it. SAC: Sir, this is an international institute and dont you think that it is bizarre to ban food from being ordered to hostel rooms? DOSW: the norms of this institute are different from other institutes. you have to follow them as you are now a part of this institute. *after a long discussion and sensing that it was not yielding any result, he told us not to waste our energy on this matter as they were not going to change their decision under any circumstances* DOSW clarified that the room provided to us is only provisional and we cannot do something which was advised against in that room. and he also mentioned that the purpose of residential hostel and community mess itself is to avoid these type of activities. and then we left the room despicably thus ending the discussion. this is only an overview of actual conversation mentioning major points of discussion omitting the detailed descriptions of each point of discussion. if you think any other points could have been used to convince them please comment here. many of you might question the need for this conversation to be brought before you, i just wanted to convey to you that we have raised every possible point that came to our mind, that we have fought hard but couldnt achieve success today. after reading this, if you have any other idea on how to convince the administration, you can comment here and we are ready to reopen the discussion.
