henri matisse 1869>1954 - 86 his was a productive long life that rivals pablo picasso - 92. i’m of an old art school world. matisse and picasso are part of my art appreciation, but i think the russian kandinsky merits a higher rank inventing abstract art, a mind-step beyond cubism. in the last fifty years, abstract transforms to conceptual, and in that rarefied air i can’t breathe. moma is god of conceptual art. which brings me to my adventure last night – the pre-opening of tonight’s moma matisse retrospective. i had the luck of having a very close friend who’s a friend of henri matisse’s grandson, the son of matisse’s son, who he sent to america to sell his art in the 1930s. that grandson, an artist, was there and we spoke at length. i think that matisse ‘cut-out’ art is visceral graphic friendly, in stark contrast to two moma exhibits – williams and heinecken, two artists of the very conceptual german & california art schools. their socio-historical nuances require volumes of cerebral references to inform me, not nourish me. i feel cold bitter. kandinsky blazed their path 100 years ago at the bauhaus in 1919. as stravisky did for music at this same time. russia is under-appreciated! https://vimeo/108526708
