here is what I know about the last years of the Clover Leaf under NW control 1 in 1969 NW did a major tie and ballast work as I was only 9 at the time I do not know how far but I know from Fillmore Illinois to Cowden Illinois most likely further either way 2 a operator at Ramsey tower told me that NW tried to move traffic after merger to Wabash and shippers complained about transit time take up to a day and sometimes longer to get to Buffalo 3 in the 1970s Missouri Pacific tried to obtain trackage rights from Mode Illinois to TRRA at Madison Illinois this was due to Penn Central trak from Pana Illinois to TRRA was in horrible shape 4 Burlington Northern tried to gain trackage rights Sorento to TRRA Madison Both times NW refused saying they were to busy and congested in Madison area 5 NW gained Southern Pacific run thru traffic as Penn Central was falling a part these trains ran until Mode bridge burnt were did this traffic go WABASH?? 6 when Mode burnt NW took its dear sweet time to rebuild and did so only after so ordered 7 after the bridge was rebuilt the traffic was still diverted and derails stayed in place on both sides of bridge NW continued to operate a Madison to Cowden local and a Charleston to Mode local three days a week most time operated as needed 8 the derails were removed from bridge when NW needed to reroute KDF2 a piggyback train reroute lasted about a month derails installed at some rr crossings 9 Charleston to Madison train operates one way each day no thru cars allowed operates with engine and caboose a lot 10 Charleston served from east by a turn out of Linden Indiana not Frankfort 11 agents told they would not get cars for local shippers grain and other freight did NW have bridge burnt we will never know but NW did every thing in its power to see that the Clover Leaf was strangled to death and I believe that the NKP brass knew this when they merged with NW and so did the men and women who worked the Clover Leaf
