hi, my son is 4, he decided to go off his food 2 and a half years ago, he only eats a handful of different food, nothing healthy, i have tried everything to get him to eat, hes genuinely terrified when i put new food in front of him, he gets nervous when i sit down to eat my dinner, he will ask me to go into another room The above question has just come in. Firstly I would ask you to think back to when your son decided to stop eating most foods he use to eat. Did something happen at this time to trigger such a response. He may be holding onto a comment made by someone to him or something he heard on tv. Say to him, I really enjoy eating my dinner, but I notice you look nervous when you see me starting to eat, can you tell me why you are feeling nervous? It is important to discover what fear your child is holding on to. This may take a little time and a lot of patience but is the first step in the process. Secondly I would suggest you start fresh with food. Pretend he is 6 months old again and only being introduced to solid food. Talk with him about food, where it comes from, bring him fruit picking or to the farm to see cows being milked if you can. Children are very curious and like to connect with the world and how it works. Then plan together a new food to introduce each week, just one thing each week for a few months. You could try using a star chart to support him. Tell him every time he is so brave and tries the food he gets the star and ensure he gets it for just a little lick. Then when this is going well start with meals, this may be a few months away though. In the meantime keep talking with him about food and his fear. But try not to focus all your energy on this either. You may want to talk with your nurse or GP about supplements if you feel he is not growing as he should be. But stay positive and you can change his behaviour. Understanding what behaviour is telling us is the key to changing it.
