hmm... not sure this will be spoiler-y, but this is my impression of something that was brought up on the season finale of TWD... A lot of what I have seen online talks about Hershel was wrong.. I dont think so. To me the important thing that was said was (paraphrased from both rick and hershel), we are here now and that is enough... Hershel knew that rick was lost for a while and carl was definitely on the verge of being lost. Being the leader and having to be strong and have everyone rely on rick wore him down and contributed to his breakdown.. having all the pressure is why carl started down the sociopath path.. when it was said that even if things change in here, it doesnt change what is out there.. there was the obvious reference to the prison as opposed to the outside, but i think hershel was also talking about changing things inside for rick and, through him, Carl... Just because Carl killed the kid and was slipping, didnt make him a bad person. Just because Michonne lost herself for a while and did bad things, it didnt make her a bad person. And, even though he had to make hard decisions and then did what he did in defense of michonne, carl and darryl, rick isnt a bad person. Rick gained a lot of his humanity back through the farming and hershels influence, but the monster was there. I think the big lesson was that yes, he could do bad things to protect those in his care, but that didnt erase his humanity either. I think in the end, rick actually got the full lesson and embraced it.. that was what I took away from it anyway....
