#hokkolorob. :) An open letter to Prof. Abhijit Chakrabarti, the VC Designate, JU, sent to TOI on 7-th Oct., 2014. Respected Prof. Chakrabarti, This letter is with reference to the Article, VC waits with olive branch for students (TOI, Kolkata, Oct. 7, 2014, Pg.-3). In the last line of the article, it has been written, that, Chakrabarti said,......I maintain what I had said earlier that the unfortunate episode was an unavoidable accident or call it a coincidence if you will. Before I put up my point, let me share with you one incidence, Sir. Last year, I was selected by our Hon. HOD Sir, to be one of the members of the advisory team of our Office of Placement & Training. We were gheraoed by a group of students. I had an important appointment with one of the leading Doctors of this city, for having consultation, with regard to my Wifes health. I came out of the meeting room to talk to our students. Initially, the students were not in any mood to listen to me. When, at last, I warned them, that, if you do not allow me to leave within 5 mins., I promise you that I will not attend any such meetings in future & also try to ensure that nobody else attend this sort of meetings. I went inside the meeting room, with crossed fingers. There was a murmur outside. Within 4.5 mins, two-three student members came inside the room & said, Sir, you are free to go. But, if the VC Sir (The then VC was Prof. Bhattacharya, who came from IITK, your predecessor) doesnt come now, who is going to address our problem? I understood their helplessness. In any case, they barricaded a way, & allowed me to go out. In fact there was a bench, which was kept in my way, which they even removed to let me go out. I dont know, what would have happened, if they didnt allow me to go. But, I pray to God, please kill me, before I apply force against my students. Sir, you call the brutal Police action, an unavoidable accident, or a coincidence. Sir, I beg to differ with you on those two words. To me, neither was it unavoidable, nor was it an accident. Anyway, I dont know what fate is in waiting for me, for daring to differ with you. In any case, I wish you & all our students a long well life. Also, I pray to the almighty, let Good sense prevail, let our Univ. flourish for all right reasons. Regards. -Dr. Debamalya Banerjee. Asso. Prof. Prod. Engg. Dept., JU
