Kims delicately formed branches, leaves, and vines emerge from the shadows of our mind and fog of time, a bridge between the present and the past. His works at first appear to be photographic - a grainy and romantic black and white from the camera of a great master - but they are undoubtedly painterly. This illusion is an allusion to the imperfect process of memory... we remember but we embellish, we take out hazy recollections and create something familiar but something new. Kims works have that comfortable familiarity but they also challenge us to look a little deeper, to reflect a little more on what in fact we are seeing.
