Reading Notes Jesus is the head of the church and as our Lord and Savior He alone has the authority and sovereignty to place believers into service equipping us with gifts and natural talents as seems good to Him and pleasing to God. Its important for us to understand Jesus equips each of us differently and places us in different parts of the body to serve and share in the spreading of the Gospel and the edification of the saints. Paul speaks of just a few of the roles within the church and he starts off with the term apostles; however as Paul uses it here it has a very specific meaning. Paul is speaking about the apostles of Christ, the men who were chosen directly by Jesus Himself. A special group of men all of whom had personally been taught by Jesus and had seen the risen Christ. We do not have apostles today that function in the capacity in which Paul is speaking. These apostles served a very specific purpose which included laying down the foundation of the church upon Jesus the rock of our salvation and to write scripture and Christian doctrine. In addition they gave confirmation of the validity of Gods word through signs, wonders and miracles as God gave them power to do so. Today many denominations may still use the word apostle, but not in the sense Paul is using here.
