https://footballrecruiting.rivals/content.asp?CID=1679286 Class of 2016 three-star athlete Jotavius Barrett of Homestead (Fla.) South Dade committed to Temple on Monday night, citing his relationship with Owls assistants Evan Cooper -- who is from the Miami area -- and Fran Brown as a key deciding factor. The coaching staff is great, the 5-foot-8, 162-pound Barrett said. They make me feel at home because theyre from Miami. Theyve been recruiting me since I was a freshman, so we started our bond early. I know coach Cooper because he was a coach at a local park I used play at. Temple beat out other schools offered by Barrett including Clemson, West Virginia and Cincinnati. Barrett has yet to visit campus but said he plans to sometime this season. Theyre building up a nice program there, Barrett said of the Owls. Theyve had a nice program in the past, but they dont get too many prospects from Florida. So I hope to change the game a little for them. Barrett said his loyalty to the Owl stems from Temple being the first to offer him. Ive been strong on them from the beginning, he said. When youre a ninth grader and you get a verbal offer like that, then that means they see something in you. Barrett is listed as an athlete but believes hell be a slot receiver for the Owls. He plays both receiver and defensive back currently. It came down to talking with my parents about what position Ill play at the next level, he said. I dont quite have the size to play defensive back, and I think Im more of a threat as a receiver. But Ill make an impact wherever they put me. Barretts goal is to graduate early, get on campus and earn playing time as a true freshman. In the meantime, hes relieved to have the recruiting process behind him. Im glad I can pay attention to our season now, he said. Ive still got two more years to chase a state title I dont have yet. Barrett said if other schools should enter his recruiting picture, his loyalty will likely remain with Temple. Ive had Clemson and West Virginia already come at me and those are big-time schools, he said. And they didnt change my mind, so I would say Im 100-percent sure Ill be going to Temple.
