On December 7, 2014, the residents of York South-Weston elected Ahmed Hussen in a nomination contest to carry the Liberal banner in the riding of York South-Weston for the 2015 Federal election. If elected to the Canadian House of Commons, he would make history by being the first Canadian of Somali Heritage in Parliament. A passionate advocate for youth, human rights, and community safety, Ahmed has made a positive contribution to the neighbourhoods he has worked in. Prior to receiving his Law Degree from the University of Ottawa, Ahmed co-founded the Regent Park Community Council, where he was voted to be the Councils first voice for 15,000 residents and ensure community input in the historic redevelopment project of Canadas oldest and largest social housing neighbourhood. His work would not stop there, as he continued to tackle issues nationally such as community safety, education, diversity, and immigration, including a stint of serving as the National President of the Canadian Somali Congress. This earned him recognition with both the Queens Elizabeth II Gold and Diamond Jubilee medals for community service. His experience working in government includes being an aide to the past Premier of Ontario, serving as a Policy and Communications Advisor on Inter-Governmental Affairs and working as a civil servant in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade for the Government of Canada. Ahmed is committed to bringing a new generation of leadership to collectively champion for families in York South-Weston.
