https://youtube/watch?v=D3oL4ntrYj8&feature=youtu.be For better understanding - MHC, Multiple Histocompatibility Complex, is now referred to in dogs as DLA, Dog Leucocyte Antigen. (A study of the MHC region in peoples immune systems is one of the evaluations done to see if people are compatible for tissue/organ transplant). The MHC/DLA is what is being studied of many dog breeds including Standard Poodles, by Dr. Lorna Kennedy, University of Manchester, UK. Please contact her or Dr. Niels Pedersen, UC Davis if your breed is interested in a study. The 2013 update of that Standard Poodle study found here: standardpoodleproject/Poodle%20Individual%20Summarys.htm 4th batch of 98 samples preparing to mail from Canada to the UK at this time. Standard Poodles are at an advantage over most other breeds with their disadvantage of a shrunken gene pool - they have the mini/toy gene pool to utilize, which is unrelated for the better part of 20 + generations. That puts the Poodle breed at a great advantage after over a century of closed stud books. The problems of immune system weakness made with the wildly popular matadors of the Wycliffe genetic bottleneck do have hope of being corrected without going out of the breed in North America and other places around the world where all Poodles are one breed. If looking to learn more and do more for the Standard Poodle gene pool, please consider joining the Standard Poodle Project email group, groups.yahoo/group/StandardPoodleProject/ A network of like-minded Breeders looking to locate and hold onto diverse genes in the Poodle population. Not everyone has to go about it the same way, but the goal is the same: Greater longevity through greater genetic diversity.
