[https://youtube/watch?v=M4o1eFCKim0] Have you ever been in court and asked the judge for an accommodation directly? Recently, I had opportunity to be in Contra Costa to watch a family court litigant father before the court there who directly asked a judge for an accommodation. Uttered before the assembled public, the request was simple -- the father had, for socioeconomic reasons, moved to another county and was asking for court services more centrally located to both parties. A very reasonable request considering the fathers disability -- spinal stenosis heavily affected by driving for hours from his environs to repeatedly litigate child custody issues in a court in another county that repeatedly refused to recognize the fathers rights in nearly any way. The judges response to this reasonable request as an emphatic No. When he inquired as to what grounds he was being denied, the judges answer was as despicable as the rest of her treatment of him that day. Well, youre the one who moved away so... And that was it; what passes for judicial treatment of the disabled in Contra Costa, and the wider California court system. Particularly egregious in light of the following: The Administrative Office of the Courts, in consultation with the Judicial Council’s Access and Fairness Advisory Committee, developed this guide to help judicial officers respond to requests made while court is in session for accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). sb-court.org/Portals/0/Documents/PDF/ADA/ProvidingDisabilityAccommodations.pdf
