https://youtube/watch?v=SUpKRm8EkHQ I think the thing that makes Utena such a great yuri romane is how it builds Utena/Anthys relationship up in a very natural, intense, empowering and believable manner. From the princess I wanted to protect because I am a Prince/was engaged to and fight for because Im stuck with her/I cant (dont) really want to lose to my best friend to the person I want to and WILL save at all costs to the only time I was ever truly happy was when I was with you and finally, truly equals in love, being the same gender and our terrible pasts the least of our worries anymore (this is in the movie, whether its part of the series continuity or not, it still applies), they were able to build their own fairy tale and break out of it with the power of their love and (eventual) mutual understanding of one another. I barely see this in yuri nowadays (or as far as romance in anime goes in general, really), and the only things that could ever come close for me (from what Ive seen) are Kannazuki no Miko (it has its flaws but its still a classic), Madoka Magica (again, still debatable although its hard to deny at this point), Re: Cutie Honey (seriously, Honey x Na-chan is so heartwarming and epic) and Kill la Kill (whether you watch it or even consider it yuri, RyuMako is just PERFECT, especially at the end). It was simply just refreshing to see something like that throughout the entirety of RGU, and think its a must-see anime for ANY fan of the medium, be they yuri, existential/psychological, romance, shoujo, even slice of life and action (although dated, the dueling scenes are still very audiovisually engrossing) and the like. Also this dance scene is gorgeous and I need to get some food and rewatch this goddamn movie ASAP.
