https://youtube/watch?v=W0mVYltHRVU Kalimehu - The Light of the Mind is a short non-narrative feature on the art of Ossie Hussein, a Guyanese artist working in the Lokon aesthetic indigenous to the Arawak origins of the people of the rain forest of Guyana of which he is part. Ossie, brother of Master artist and archaeologist George Simon, resides in the village of Pacuri, the largest Amerindian community nearest to Georgetown - Pacuri, has come to be known by the name Catholic priests supplanted on the area when in the 1800s a missionary was established in that area and named St Cuthberts Mission. The Lokon aesthetic was however never supplanted and these brothers have been able to found and nurture a school of art from which has arisen several mature and emerging artists many of whose works now grace the National Collection in Guyana. Despite this achievement and perhaps because it borrows nothing from, and owes no debt to the inherited traditions of Western Modern art which dominates the output to varying degrees of most all Caribbean artist, it has received scant critical attention. The only other filmic exploration of this aesthetic im aware of is the 1993 Kril/Roopnaraine feature included in their documentary series - The Making of Caribbean Art. Critics of Caribbean art would do well to take note of this indigenous tradition which has impressively stamped its footprint on the emerging landscape of Caribbean Visual Art and wont be going any place anytime soon.
