The Year 2014 symbolized the year in which countries sought to help raise awareness of the UN Conference on Small Island Developing States, which was held in September in Apia, Samoa, and focused on building partnerships for sustainable development. The UN Member States indicated their commitment to SIDS reaffirming “that small island developing States remain a special case for sustainable development” particularly in light of vulnerabilities they face such as “climate change and sea-level rise” towards their sustainable development. The conference highlighted the challenges facing the small island developing States, as those which are confronted by all countries. In their commitment to support SIDS, the countries discussed several main development areas under the broad heading of “Sustained and sustainable, inclusive and equitable economic growth with decent work for all.” The aim was to explore development models in small island developing States for the implementation of sustainable development and poverty eradication. States highlighted that there was need for a more integrated approach to the sustainable development of small island developing States, with the support of the international community and all stakeholders. Importantly noted at the conference were the implementation challenges of SIDS due to issues they faced such as a limited level of resources to respond effectively to multiple and failure to fully succeeded key areas such as building capacity, strengthening national institutions according to national priorities, gaining access and developing renewable energy and other environmentally sound technologies, creating an enabling environment for sustainable development or fully integrating the Barbados Programme of Action and the Mauritius Strategy into national plans and strategies. As such the Member States underscored the need for adequate and coordinated support from the United Nations system and the importance of accessible and transparent support from the international financial institutions. To this end topics covered included ‘sustainable energy’, ‘disaster risk management’ and ‘food security and nutrition’ among others. The post 2015 agenda further highlighted the key area of “Monitoring and Accountability”. This included support to monitor the full implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action, the Mauritius Strategy and the Samoa Pathway, based on relevant targets and indicators relevant to the small island developing States in order to ensure accountability at all levels. The SIDS emphasized their determination to work with all countries to find solutions that will ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
