And he responded, Well, you know, it seems to be what the people like to hear. Whether or not Dylan really wrote the protest anthem in a moment of cynicism, it remains one of the defining works of the 1960s. It was released weeks after JFKs death and just a few months before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed. It was a time of tectonic cultural shifts, and Dylan summed it up in a three-minute folk song.
