https://youtube/watch?v=eHQ2Q-_bl8k A few days ago, I saw one of the most interesting films Ive seen in a while and it has stuck with me ever since. This is Breathless by Jean-Luc Godard whos one of the most influential experimentalists in film. Godard is someone who always looked to go against the conventions of mainstream cinema and create movies that were more about innovation than understanding. With Breathless, Godard makes a movie that feels entertaining while also being an interesting story about youth and moral detachment. The most ground breaking part of Breathless is the jump cuts that are used by Godard to get rid of the little parts that might seem boring. This results in many shots that dont connect together, and it also gives Breathless a fast and exciting pace that fits the modern jazzy style of its tone. All of the cinematography by Raoul Coutard is fabulous. Most of the lighting is natural and yet there are beautiful shots like these in the hotel where light from outside is illuminating the room. Light weight cameras also werent available by this point, yet hes using hand held cameras that enhance the rough feeling. The story is very reminiscent of something like Bonnie and Clyde. These two main characters are fascinating in how they are young people who shape themselves to think that theyre free. They try to claim that theyre touch and free, yet theyre living under the shadow of their idols and desires. Breathless has a fast pace and excitement that doesnt come from action, but from a style and tone that feels fresh. This is an amazing film because of the style it displays and the way it presents its story.
