Pool is like the game of life itself, cause make no mistake it is a game full of endless shots, set ups and possibilities. The key is calling your shots and following through, though sometimes we may stumble and miss the object ball. Beginners try to narrow their stance, taking aim without a good stable hand base; attempting manipulation of the english as they try to hit balls in an ascending order. But pool is unpredictable. Sometimes your break is faulty, sometimes one hits the eight and win by default. Sometimes you can play a friendly game for fun and hit the balls outside the rules. Champion rules say a clean break still demands an open table, that you must decide if youre a little number or a big one. If you scratch twice in some tournaments, youre ruled out completely. In other houses, the rules are bent so that you can place another bet. But youd better make your shot if youve got some dough in your pocket (or piercing blue eyes aimed at the center of the white ball). The Hustler is really not about victory but graceful defeat. Being a man means accepting defeat and realizing that being a true winner is not always attaining a material prize but rather losing gracefully and giving your winnings up for a person in need. Whether that is a force of hand, a threat, or a calm dissolution of will; the willingness to walk away and play another table is always open. Sometimes we must give up the things we want most, even our dreams..., as Spider-Mans Aunt May would say. Jackie Gleason was nominated in an against type dramatic supporting role. And the acting prince never was better than he was here. Vulnerable, headstrong, fiery, committed and noble. A character actor in the guise of a leading man.
