https://youtube/watch?v=leK1A3A0E3A One interesting fact regarding the music of this episode that nobody noticed is that cues by Herrmann, Constant, and Luypaertz used the exact same instrumentation! Guy Laepaertzs music (Spoutnik No. 1, CBS cue # 1001) came first (in terms when composed) then M. Constants music cue used (Light Rain, CBS cue # 1005), and then last--but not least---Herrmanns music used from THE OUTER SPACE SUITE that starts with the Prelude, CBS cue # 1007). Anyway, it appears Herrmann had access to the written music from Luypaertz and/or Constant because he used the same instrumentation. All of the music is thematically Outer Space related. Cue #1001 is titled “Spoutnik No. 1 by Guy Luypaertz, also recorded in December, 1957. He also composed cue #1002, “Spoutnik No. 2.” These cues set the standard of instrumentation since Herrmann used the exact same instrumentation: 3 flutes (3 piccolos doubling), 3 oboes (2 english horns doubling), 3 clarinets (bass clarinet doubling), 3 bassoons (contra-bassoon doubling), harp, and celeste. Evidently Herrmann felt the need to conform to the previously set orchestral guideline for his own contribution.Cue # 1003 by R. Challan is titled “Au Crespuscle” (roughly translated as “Twilight”) and cue # 1004 “Songe” (translated as “Dream”). The latter was also used in this famous episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE from Season One, Third From The Sun. You can hear Spoutnik No. 1 at 6:17 into the You Tube video. The next cue afterward is Herrmanns Time Passage but youll hear a lot more of this music in the episode. Challans cue was heard right at the start of the episode after the opening credits. Soon after that at about the 2:33 point youll hear Constants Light Rain music.
