The motels manager, Bertha Franklin, said she shot Cooke in self-defense. She claimed that Cooke had broken into the her office-apartment in a rage, wearing nothing but a shoe and a sports coat, demanding to know the whereabouts of a woman who had been with him at the hotel. Franklin denied knowledge, but the enraged Cooke did not believe her and violently grabbed her. Franklin says she grappled with Cooke, the two fell to the floor, and then she ran for her gun. She fired and struck Cooke once in the chest and, according to Franklin, he shouted, Lady, you shot me! before charging at her a final time. She then beat him with a broomstick until, finally, he fell dead.
