https://youtube/watch?v=qtAfwHvS1ek Well - as you can tell by the AVALANCHE of Ben Folds pictures Ive been tagged in and uploaded this weekend, I sang backups for him when he passed through Fort Wayne on Friday night. Before the gig, I didnt know much of his music. I had only heard Rockin the Suburbs once, and I had seen him on The Sing-Off. I could tell he was a super smart dude, who was a very dedicated musician. His Wikipedia page says something about his practicing scales for hours and hours a day at one point, so thats pretty telling of his musicianship! But since being a small part of his backup ensemble, Ive gained such an appreciation for this figure as an artist. Hes not as rocking as Led Zeppelin, hes not as cool as Kanye West, but his ability to put such a poignant story to such a catchy tune really breaks my heart. I dont think his music is for everyone, in fact I made the joke that hes really meant for angst-y white people alone. I dont know if thats fair - but I do think his music makes sense to me. This song in particular means a lot to me, if only because I really, really dig what hes getting at, or at least what I THINK hes getting at. I actually get a bit emotional even listening to this song, just because of what means to me. But most importantly, Ben Folds is now a representation of the beautiful and wonderful people in my life. If not for the people who taught me to sing, and for the people who gave me the courage to pursue anything, and most directly Ly Wilder, I never would have been able to do this. Whenever I hear his music now, Im nearly driven to tears, for Im reminded of the gratitude that found its way into my heart. Im not perfect - but dammit Im trying to be grateful. Thank you, Ben Folds. Im just a guy to you, and perhaps you are just a symbol of lifes wonderfulness to me, but your music is now a part of me. How amazing is it that someones art should be so human.
