https://youtube/watch?v=scBY3cVyeyA If you haven’t seen the movie “Contact” with Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey, I highly recommend it. There’s a scene in the movie (linked in this post) of particular interest to me today. In the scene, Ellie (Jodi Foster) is inside the mysterious machine/vehicle and launched into spacetime. She’s strapped into a restraining harness designed to protect her during the journey. The chair and supportive structures were not part of the vehicle’s design (which came in a message from space, hence the movie’s title). The chair was added by humans as a safety feature. During her experience traveling through spacetime, her body begins to experience greater and greater vibrations and G-forces as she is whipped from solar system to solar system on her journey. Every new system she reaches presents greater and greater vibrations on her body until she can barely function. When the shaking is at its absolute worst, and her eyes are closed tightly and she tries to hang on for dear life, she happens to open her eyes and notice that her amulet, given to her by Palmer (Matthew McConaughey), has lifted off of her chest and is floating serenely within the capsule, completely unaffected by the extreme violence of the shaking. She does something incredibly brave, and reaches to the safety harness latch over her heart and releases it, letting her float into the capsule to catch and hold her locket. Behind her, the chair continues to wobble violently until it collapses and crushes itself to the side of the capsule. —————— I believe this a perfect (and intentional) metaphor for attachment. The universe is trying to flow through us, and sometimes it encounters an attachment that we created that we intended to serve us. The flow shakes us and rattles us, and we experience that flow as pain and turbulence. The miracle of our cultivation of self-awareness is that it gives us the ability to recognize an attachment for what it is, and make a choice to let it go when it no longer serves us. When we do that, the universe flows through us smoothly and effortlessly, revealing everything we need in surprising, wondrous, and perfect ways.
