Lauderdale began drafting the Homeless Hate Laws. Since then Food Not Bombs and other homeless advocates have been plotting and fighting to resist them every step of the way. Resist Homeless Hate Laws Blog:homelesshatelaws.blogspot/ On April 15th the first hearing of the Public Indecency Ordinance and the Storage on Public Property Ordinance was held. On the surface such a law seems to make sense. But when followed by the panhandling ban, camping ban, and the sharing ban, it becomes clear it was the first in a series of Homeless Hate Laws. Homeless Hate Laws basically criminalize the things a homeless person needs to do to survive. I was personally at every one of these City Commission meetings. Dozens of advocates and homeless local citizens came out to speak in opposition, very few came out to speak in favor. When the sharing ban was first enforced on November 2, 2014, at 1:15 PM, I entered a hunger strike. Now, ashamed, the police hide in plain sight, threatening to mail out tickets. The Citys treatment of 90 year old Chef Arnold and other homeless advocates has turned their homeless policies into an international laughingstock. But they have yet to truly hear our demands to have these laws thrown out entirely. We need to hit them where it hurts: Their wallets. December 2nd will be my 31st day of hunger strike. It is also the day that Ft. Lauderdale and friends are putting on a huge holiday spectacular called “52nd St. Christmas on Las Olas,” during which millions will be made while the hungry are allowed to starve. But we can stop it. I urge you to contact these businesses and tell them you are boycotting them and the over-the-top Christmas celebration until the sharing ban is lifted. Christmas is Cancelled!
