I love basketball enough to write poetry on it. The season is here. Ive said this before, but I wish everybody loved something as much as I love the NBA. To me, it is the best team sport platform to witness a microcosm of the human condition. No helmets, only 10 people on the court, the visibility of facial expressions relationship dynamics, and how close the seating is to the players all play a role in that. Im also drawn in by the physics of it, the motion. The most dexterous part of our body is our hands and in basketball there are 100 fingers ubiquitously conscious of where the ball is and how they can get to it and manipulate it so the relationship with the ball is much more intimate than something that requires sticks, bats, gloves, or rackets or that gets dribbled with your feet. The Mona Lisa was not painted with feet. And when somebodys connection with the ball transcends everyone elses - its visually present and recognized. Theres so much more sensation in the game, and The great art of life is sensation. To feel that we exist - Lord Byron. So when I sit down on opening night of the season and feel butterflies in my chest just from watching - it becomes much more than a game.
