Still, someone manages to fly a drone above the pitch carrying a nationalist Albanian banner. The Serb players manage to take it down as it flew lower, but Albanian player Andi Lila runs to grab the banner away from the Serbs. Serb fans jump onto the pitch and start fighting the Albanian team, one of them brandishing a stool. Serbian team and officials break it up, the game is called off, and Serb ultras rain garbage and stools on the Albanians as they run off the pitch. You can see at the end some of the ultras attacking the players as they get to the tunnel. The banner in question showed a map of the common definition of Greater Albania, including Kosovo, Corfu (not commonly included), and Northern Epirus. A Greek pointed out to me (Epirus is part of Greece for the uninformed), that Andi Lila, the Albanian player who ran to save the banner, players for PAS Giannina. Giannina is based in... Epirus. Someone sack this guy. Im surprised that UEFA allowed these two to be drawn in the same group. They even specifically made sure Gibraltar didnt play against Spain, but Serbia and Albania, no problem. The Kosovo issue should blow over, but the status of Gibraltar? Too much. Heres hoping the next match is in a closed, neutral venue.
