https://youtube/watch?v=vmDDOFXSgAs Paul Desmond (Paul Emil Breitenfeld) (Alto Saxophone) was born in San Francisco in 1924. He had a beautiful alto sax tone and was with Dave Brubeck’s popular quartet from 1951 to 1967. Desmond’s alto was a key part of the sound. They toured the world, playing 300 concerts a year, and had a Columbia recording contract that called for four albums a year. Desmond wrote “Take Five” and left the huge royalties of this hit to the Red Cross. After the quartet broke up, Desmond retired and performed part-time, doing a concert with the Modern Jazz Quartet in 1971. He also had reunions with Brubeck from 1972 to 1975 before his death from cancer. His last concert was with Dave Brubeck in February, 1977, at New York’s Avery Fisher Hall.
