I remember it for that as well however I also remember it from the air traffic control side as my father Steve was working at Indianapolis Air Traffic Control center (ZID) that day. His area was one of the more airplane saturated areas when ALL US airspace was closed for the first time ever. 4,000+ airline flights and (what people tend to forget when thinking about this) countless other general aviation airplanes landed in the span of over an hour and a half. That’s 200,000+ people if every flight counted in this had 50 people on it. In reality it was probably closer to 500,000 total (airline and general aviation airplanes). This was something they were NEVER trained for and they handled it flawlessly. We will NEVER forget!
