i found this beautiful video clip while looking for something else entirely and what a lovely surprise to note it was made in my neck of the woods in the Irish Midlands ( County Westmeath ) and it features my old parish church where i was a mass server as a young boy in the early 50s and oh wow was that church cold on winter mornings when us mass servers had to open up the church at 07.30 for mass at 08.00 , the old Latin tridentine mass was very long usually an hour long but could often stretch to an hour and a half depending on which priest was celebrating the mass , mostly in my time as a server it was the elderly Parish Priest who said mass and very very often he would forget and repeat long pieces of script and psalms All young boys in those days wore short pants ( just above the knee ) we were not allowed to use cushions or any material to kneel on those cold marble steps , if we were caught using a handkerchief or anything to protect our knees we would be severely reprimanded by the mass celebrant suspended from serving and reported to our school teacher and our parents and shamed by the priest Girls were not allowed to serve mass in Roman catholic churches until the early 60s when masses were changed from Latin language to English , Anyway after all weekday early morning mass us servers had to make our way to primary school on foot directly after mass and if we got soaked wet from rain on the way we had no choice but grin and bear it and sit in class for the rest of the day in our wet attire until we got home after classes and changed our clothes Thank fully i survived the effects however sadly some if not most of my companions of the time later developed arthritis and related complaints , Sure us old folks keep reminding everyone of .......... the good old days ........ However we tend to overlook the darker side of times past and only recall the very best of times .
