i read an article by a pastor recently, and it was on the subject of marriage. he was very humble and considerate, but also very open and honest. he felt convicted about marrying people who were not Christians, and who also had no true desire to become such. he also believed that even if they were professing Christians, that they should be faithful and accountable to a local body. he truly felt like since it was Gods covenant, it should be reserved for those who sincerely choose to honor God. he committed not to marry another couple who was living together unless they were willing to live apart until the marriage; he also required that they receive counseling, and ultimately be willing to commit their lives to Christ. he ended his article by saying that he was not trying to be judgmental or self righteous, but that he only wanted to treat the covenant of marriage with the utmost respect and dignity, and that to do so required both parties to have a relationship with God through Christ. you may agree or disagree, but i applaud him. and for the last few years, i too have vowed to take my role in marrying couples more seriously; and so you might take that under consideration before asking me to. of course, they can just tell me what i want to hear (which they have many times), or attend church just long enough to convince me (yep, had that happen too); but thats something theyll have to take up with God. as pastors, we have to give an account of how we carried out our roles; i am not going to be guilty of treating Gods holy covenant of marriage as a common thing.
