i think the idea of altruism as self-negation is baloney. i give for selfish reasons: because it makes me feel good; because thats the kind of person i want to be. i give because it increases the flow in my life. a couple years ago i took on the practice of tithing both time and money and noticed that my income increased substantially. i tithe 10% of my income to different causes that i choose each month. this practice shifted my focus around money from thinking mostly about saving to seeking out worthy individuals and organizations to support. this change in perspective extended beyond the realm of donations. every purchase i made became an opportunity to support others who had something of value to offer, instead of feeling pain from spending money. if you want to create abundance, see what you can give away.
