i was just lying out on the deck in the country and was suddenly surrounded by wildlife. a finch landed no more than four feet from me in the dogberry tree. it chirped and chirped. then a cats head slowly rose from the steps facing the barn. a stray. it looked around carefully, gracefully, not even noticing me. then another two finches landed in a nearby tree, chirping, followed by a huge crow in the tree directly behind me. it cawed and cawed, screaming bloody murder. it was frighteningly loud, then another crow landed in the distance and cawed. the cat, noticing me, slowly sank away, as though in slow motion. the finches left, then the crows. i came inside and saw roly (my dog) close to the door and almost jumped out of my skin.
