id say riot police are the most benign form of the official tool of mindless enforcement. the conflict is naturally violent since it stems from compulsion and the will to use violent force against other humans. the clash of rioters against baton wielding reservists is violent, but not lethal. and if a person is arrested and charged then there are hundreds of others in the same condition - judicial leniency is proportionate to occupancy. i think the only logical criticism against crowd control tactics is whether the assumed legitimacy of rule by representatives of the majority is valid. i mean if the legislative process is valid, and the constitution is generally defunct, then law enforcement is appropriately given a wide grant of discretion to better facilitate effective and efficient prosecution of our laws. If youre gonna raise an issue with police discretion then arent you actually challenging the legitimacy of the whole system (in a passive aggressive kind of way)? thats just my opinion.
