if I put a chest harness on my dogs, they would pull...................... If I put a pinch or choke on them, they will walk right next to me. I do not ask for a perfect heel cause I am NOT in an obedience ring. If I were ever to train my dogs for the obedience ring, I would do it exactly like I say in my Handbook for new puppy Owners. I would play a game... One section of the game at a time. I would only train my pup for about 2 min and work up as the pup wanted. I would keep it a fun game. As the game progressed I would ask more of my pup and I would increase the training sessions as I would see the stress level on my pup, I would also be sure to always end the session with my pup winning in a great job of heeling with attention to my face. it is a dance.. it is a partnership... it is a game with precise rules and turns and waltzes and two steps, etc, etc, etc... It requires special gear. gear that the pup can relate to the game afoot. in heeling/obedience I wear special shoes and my dog wears his special choke collar and I bring out a special leash... In tracking, we change clothes once again.... I bring out a long line and the tracking harness. my partner in this dance knows all the moves that go with each outfit... we do not dance long and we do not go on to the next step in the dance until he is fluent in the dance steps before the next step. It is a partnership not a trick or a test ... it is an ACT on the stage of life in the obedience ring or on a schutzhund field. Never would I ever use a gentle lead or haulty lead on my dogs muzzle or face, how disgraceful to my partner and how stupid I would look if I couldnt get my puppy or dog to heel beside me without any tension on the leash! Every longtime, experienced trainer, can tell by the way you walk your dog and the equipment you use, if you are any kind of an animal trainer or not. When I drive my van and stop at rest stops, I dont have to say anything and folks read the sign on my van and want to impress me with all that their dog can do... Look my dog can walk off leash and he listens to me (not)... Arnt you impressed? What do you think? am I impressed? Only how ignorant you are to have your dog off leash In a public Rest Stop and the smile on your face looks stupid when you are trying to impress me and you call your dog three - five times, till he decides on his own that he should get back to you. after he smells my ass !!!! no I am not impressed! And one more pet peeve of mine.... All you folks with haulty leads on your dogs muzzle. I dont care if your dog is healing freely with it on or not, your ignorance is showing. Yep to any REAL dog/animal trainer who knows anything at all about training dogs, we know that you couldnt train your pup or dog with the choke collar so you had to use the haulty leash. What does that tell us? Lets take a public opinion poll and ask the public what they think when they see this:
