if i post something about karma, please do not assume i am talking about a kind of old testament biblical retribution which, from my reading, is mostly based in a sense of anger and revenge. karma is simply the law of cause and effect. the buddha observed the world around him from a clear state of mind and saw that everything was inextricably connected. he also perceived that everything we do has repercussions... each thought and action triggers the next thought and action... endlessly. he called this the wheel of desire and suffering. we feel unfulfilled and we wish to change that, to address our sense that we are not satisfied... so we initiate an action to address our sense of dis ease... but because we are unenlightened our actions are based in selfishness and will only trigger more negative karma. this goes on and on... and many buddhists believe it goes on lifetime after lifetime. this cannot be proven scientifically but science tells us that energy cannot be destroyed and not a single atom has ever been lost. where do we think we can go? there is no such thing as a vacuum. the ego is illusion and our identity is based in ego... but whatever it is that animates us is not ego. what is it? there is no place where cause and effect does not reach. and karma is something which scientists are aware of. robert lanza, the brilliant stem cell researcher, sat in our zen center and said, there IS cause and effect. the buddha also said there is way to free ourselves from negative karma - wake up and stay awake in the present moment. let go of attachment to ego and desire. then do good for others. we are not obligated to do this... but if we continue to filter the world through our egocentric negative viewpoint, we are simply poisoning ourselves.
