if you have been in an emotionally abusive relationship, your fear reflex has been stimulated for a very long time, so the normal idea of facing your fears does not work. rather, there is the need for a very deep healing and recovery from the abuse and a recovery of self-esteem and self-love. you need to become bigger, stronger, bolder, and more resourceful than your fear. the fear tries to keep you safe by hiding away, and if you want to grow yourself and have a better life, you dont want to have to do it by endlessly fighting the fears which is exhausting. the fear makes you feel very very powerless, and the two main fears are that you are not good enough and not lovable enough..this is what keeps you trapped in this emotional abuse... --annie kaszina, recovery from emotional abuse
