if you have father than you like and comment pass this post The first celebration of Father’s Day in the United States was in Spokane, Wa at a YMCA on June 19, 1910. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Richard Nixon made it a permanent national holiday in 1972. Gifts, cards, and of course the obligatory tie are all lovely gestures. Looking at my own family, my old man wasn’t much for celebrations of his parenting. Actually, if we could manage to get him to sit down to a family dinner on the third Sunday of June, he usually looked like a caged animal and would dash out at first opportunity to finish mowing the lawn. I guess some of that has rubbed off on me. While I don’t think I have taken it to his extremes (I can sit through a family dinner damn it), I can certainly appreciate where he has been coming from for the last 35 years. I don’t need cards and ties because the time I am spending with my son is the gift. GROAN – If I didn’t write that line I would be rolling my eyes too. Even though his finger nails are tiny daggers (no matter how many times we cut and file them), and his affinity to abuse my nose with bites and shoving his fingers in my nostrils (with deadly ease and accuracy), and the fact that he has managed to throw up in my mouth on at least three occasions… I still love every second I spend with him. I hear dudes complaining about having to take their kids to karate, or having to watch them when the wife wants a girl’s night, yet they are first ones looking for their #1 Dad coffee mug on Sunday morning. I am only 16 months into this party and I am sure there is a grizzled dad reading this saying “just wait”. I know I am in store for some epic meltdowns, deceptions, and gooey things shoved between my couch cushions, so be it – I knew what I was signing up for. I guess for me (right now), Father’s Day is a day to reflect on the events that allowed this person that has changed my entire life to be created. So many things can go wrong, it is good to appreciate the things that have gone right. However you choose to celebrate (or don’t), enjoy your weekend and your children.
