ift.tt/1tLFUWF Refinery29 When youre forced to stay inside in the middle of a snowstorm and eat that questionable can of soup in the back of your pantry, you may start to feel pretty tough. This is survival, you think to yourself as you slurp chicken-and-stars in your pajamas. Im a pioneer. Except, you probably have no idea what real survival means. Those whove had to fend for themselves under dire circumstances in the wilderness have been forced to do some extreme things to stay alive. When Wild hits theaters on Friday, well get a vivid look into one womans story of enduring the elements. In anticipation of the new film, we delved into other incredible, inspiring tales of people who have survived against all odds. Ahead, 10 incredible stories of those who ventured into nature and emerged a new person. And I Alone Survived In her book, Lauren Elder recounts the harrowing story of a 1976 plane crash of which she was the sole survivor. Wearing just her heeled boots, a skirt, and blouse, Elder had no choice but to descend a mountain to the nearby town of Independence, Calif. The journey took 36 hours. This is the incredible story of her survival. Wild Reese Witherspoon portrays Cheryl Strayed, who set out on a 1,000-mile trek through the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. According to The New York Times, the new film at once celebrates the sublimity of nature and the spirit of solitude. Far North Based on a short story by Sara Maitland, this film tells the story of Saiva, a woman who believes a shaman has cursed her to harm anyone she cares for. Because of her supposed fate, she lives in relative solitude — until she meets a man frozen on the tundra. Tracks In this 2013 film, Mia Wasikowska plays Robyn Davidson, who took a nine-month journey across the Australian desert with four camels and her dog. A photographer from National Geographic (played by Adam Driver) accompanies her to document the trek. Into the Wild The brain child of one Sean Penn, this 2007 film is a cinematic interpretation of the 1996 book by Jon Krakauer. The movie tells the story of Christopher McCandless, who lived in the Alaskan wilderness in the early 90s. (Bonus: The Eddie Veder soundtrack for the film is pretty great.) Walden Henry David Thoreaus transcendentalist account of his experience at Walden Pond is a true classic. Thoreau spent time in nature in the hopes of developing a deeper understanding of the way our society works. Technically, his cabin was just a couple of miles from a nearby town — but his elected solitude makes for a fascinating story of personal introspection. The Odyssey Odysseus has a rough go of things. Hes just trying to make home from the Trojan War to his wife Penelope, whos fending off suitors lined up around the block. But, before he can return, he has to face Cyclops, sirens, and Lotus Eaters among other obstacles. His trip is one crazy ride. 127 Hours James Franco portrays Aron Ralston in this 2010 biographical drama. Ralston, a canyoneer, was trapped by a boulder in Blue John Canyon in Utah in 2003. Warning: This tale is brutal to watch, as Ralston attempts to sever his own arm and is forced to drink his own urine to survive. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Mark Twains classic American novel is the story of a boy who leaves home to venture down the Mississippi River. He encounters a host of characters on his way through the antebellum South. Twains story is doused in satire and presents a particularly poignant perspective on race. If you werent required to read it in high school, definitely pick it up now. Julie of the Wolves Miyax is a 13-year-old orphan, already married and very unhappy. So, she runs away to San Francisco to find her pen pal. On the way, she gets lost in the Alaskan tundra. With no food, shelter, and no real idea how to survive, she becomes part of a pack of wolves.
