ill be the first person to admit that I am poor by choice not by chance. I choose to quit highschool, I choose to stay pregnant and have a baby at 20, I choose not to stay with my kids father.I choose to raise my kids with family values and the desire to be better than me. I did not choose to get sick, I did not choose to lose my job and have to move my kids from place to place to place. I tell my kids every day, dont end up like me, on foodstamps, rental assistance, and no cash at all coming in. But I am not trash. My kids are all in college, none of them had a baby at 17..or 18 or are even pregnant right now. They are waiting until they are done with school. They respect me and their grandpaerents and have an overall respect for life well-lived.I didnt make that status to make anyone cry, I made it because my child was already crying. It is sad to learn that the people who smiled in my face and relentlessly offered me help and called me family, could then say that I am trash and that I use them. Things will, sadly, never be the same.
