im on my own little holiday in kassari, hiiumaa, estonia right now. this is the small village that my grandmother fled during world war 2. the russian soldiers were commiting atrocities and she decided to take my father who was around 3 years old at the time to tallin were they could blend in with a larger population. of course, were not allowed to call them atrocities in the west because the soviets were our allies and weve never fought on the side of evil. im sure she was exaggerating when she took the great leap into the unknown with an infant in her arms. this is the village where my great grand father passed away the day after my she left with little juri (my fathers name until the border guards in canada changed it to george) because he was so heart broken over the knowledge hed never see them again. but alas im sure it was all a big misunderstanding and everything would have been fine if shed just trusted the 18 year old communist soldiers that had occupied the village. oh well, whats done is done. the russian army isnt here anymore. they are off in the crimea following a shirtless idiot on a horse through to the black sea. and after that, who knows? probably doing his best to show the world how tough he is with out ever offending china. whatever it is, it wont end well for him and the day it does im going to order a shot of smirnoff, fonzie punch the juke box and dance like an idiot to we wont get fooled again. but until then im left to investigate my roots on a rented bicycle with a safety helmet that fit my head so perfectly you could almost believe that my ancestors knew i was coming and wanted me to know i was protected. i know that its not true but some times the trick of the light is easier than the solitude. anyway, ill be back tomorrow with more news. there is a wooden eiffel tower on the other side of the island that the estonian government has been trying to get the farmer to take down for 6 years because of structural concerns. looks like a perfect climbing destination for a windy day. i hope the ancestors are serious about this protection thing!
