imdb/title/tt2177771/ Went to see this movie this afternoon. Directed by George Clooney who also stars in it, it tells the story of the American artists and architects cum soldiers who went into Europe at the end of WW2 to try to stop the Nazis stealing or destroying European art. Hitler, at his most unhinged at the end of the war had his retreating soldiers steal art from houses, castles and museums. He then gave an order that if he was killed, all of the art collected was to be destroyed. Unfortunately some was, but this group of six American soldiers were able to find and uncover priceless pieces of art and sculpture, sometimes only two steps behind the Germans and one step ahead of the Russians. The movie drifts in its script at times and does get a bit smaltzy which probably would appeal to the American filmgoer. But there are intensely poignant moments as you look at rooms full of art and the belongings of those who had perished in the concentration camps. But all in all a great afternoon out and a salutary reminder that what ever the war, civilisation must go on and an important part of that is our artistic heritage. Was art worth dying for? See the film.
