imho the late great Doug Sahm is the godfather of country rock. born & raised in San Antonio, he was well versed not only in country, but also rock n roll, blues, western swing, & latin/mexican music. he burst onto the rock scene in 1965 with The Sir Douglas Quintet & turned the world onto a rock n roll sound infused with mexican music soon to be known as Tex-Mex. in the later 60s he beat Gram Parsons & The Byrds to the punch with being what i believe the first one to perform country rock. then in the early 70s he spearheaded the Texas Outlaw movement. to his credit, he never tried to make it in Nashville like the more famous outlaws Willie Nelson & Waylon Jennings did. his influence on roots rock, americana, & alternative country has been tremendous & cant be overstated.
