important interview, I lived through this period and met with Arafat in this period. We knew what he was up to with all sides. A truly sad set of choices for suicide operations by the palestinians represented by Hamas, but mostly funded from the Gulf. Hard to take back what this did to the Jewish psyche in Israel. But it is still the case, that the security people on both sides, always knew each others chess game, and could have stopped this long ago. The tragedy is the ignorance, naivete, manipulability of angry, fearful people, really on all sides, that leads to politicians continuing this and making it worse. There is a special place in hell, however, for the proxy warriors from New York to Los Angeles, and from Riyadh to Qatar to Teheran, who wanted this to keep going in perpetuity. Some of us felt that deep in his heart, Arafat was ready to cut a deal, if the Arab world had backed it at the time, which they did not in the 90s. Many people of good intentions believed for many years that Netanyahu really was ready for a deal. All have been disappointed by such leaders. But the truth is that without a far larger group of Jews and Arabs demanding an end to this, it will never end in this generation. despite all the manipulators, Politics begins and ends with people, their hearts and their individual wills. if they want to continue to sacrifice their children to the god of war and dress it up in nice words and flags, then they will. if they want the opposite then it will happen. That is why I would like to see more Jews refusing to serve in the army, and more Palestinians refusing violence as a way to the future. There are courageous people on both sides doing this but it requires far more.
