in 2001 my mother had a car accident and choked on blood in her lungs which made her body shut down and go into a coma.the doctor advised me to turn off the life support machine as he said my mother was braindead and even if she did recover she would be too brain-damaged to even recognise me.your mother has gone he said......i refused to turn off the life support machine.......miraculously ,many weeks later my mother awoke ......she wasnt brain damaged and lived for another 9 years.im so glad i ignored the doctors, they clearly arent always right.i had lots of deep conversations with Sylvia about what it was like in her mind during the coma.she said she was constantly fighting her way through thick curtains of wet black ribbons that went right up to the sky......one paricular day she saw a shaft of light shining through in the distance and she headed for it and spread open more of the wet black ribbons to reveal the first light she had seen during the weeks of darkness........she then opened her eyes and awoke from the coma.
