in 2014 I co-chaired an event in Parliament with Cuban politicians and families of the Miami Five. In early November I was part of a delegation to the US Embassy in London, making the case for the US to work with the Cuban Government to see the release of aid worker Alan Gross, held in Cuba, and the remaining members of the Miami 5, imprisoned in the USA. Representatives gave us a fair hearing and promised to relay the reports and information we provided. I was therefore delighted that the release of the men was announced alongside the historic joint statements by President Obama and President Raul Castro, that diplomatic arrangements between the US and Cuba would begin a process of “normalisation”. The Cuba Solidarity Campaign and trade union movement has campaigned on these issues over many years and I look forward to further progress being made to end the blockade which has impacted on the Cuban economy.
