in a small village called kitovu, near the top of a mountain i saw the absolute best example of affective attunement & secure attachment between a caregiver & infant that i have ever seen in 10+ years of clinical experience. i saw a jaja (grandmother) who chose to go against cultural norms & expectations & NOT abandon her children & grandchildren when her husband died. i saw the joy & hope of Christ in this jajas eyes as she affectionately, joyfully, & selflessly cared for her grandchild. i saw a woman who has likely experienced more crisis & loss than any of us can imagine, actively engage her 11-month grandson with ease & joy as she shared her story. there were no baby einstein videos, ExerSaucers, flat-screen TVs the size of an entire wall, mocha java lattes, or college preparatory Pre-pre-K classes. there were not hundreds of infant & toddler toys cluttering a perfectly decorated play room or personal home playground equipment. there was a dirt floor with no furniture, a bag of beans, and a rubbish can lid. and there was a loving, attuned caregiver providing intentional, consistent, nurturing care to a child. it was a BEAUTIFUL sight!
