in case you were wondering, its the casework for a 7in modular tablet im designing. yes i got a mendel90 3d printer. yes amazingly it works and doesnt mess up too often as long as i clean the glass properly so the base layer sticks to it. heres pictures of the path that the extrusion head takes, and another of the 2 parts prior to translation for the printer commands. i am however staggered by the level of detail required. after only one week the source code to generate the 2 snap-fit parts is currently a 950-line python program, which generates a 760k STL (3D) file, from which a 2.5 *megabyte* g-code (go code for controlling x,y,z, extruder and temperatures) file is generated. each part takes around 25 minutes to do, takes around 2 metres of 3mm PLA filament, and i have to sit there watching the damn print head go back and forth like a hawk in case it goes wrong. the hilarious thing is that on the 2nd iteration the stepper motors were making a tune that sound very much like something which would go down well at a death / heavy metal baroque concert. add some drums, a heavily-distorted violin and a screaming vocalist or two, and i could probably sell it and help fund the project...
