indigiTALKS Video Essay Project Launches for imagineNATIVE 2013! Entertaining, daring, and investigative theses celebrate new perspectives on Indigenous-created Cinema June 29, 2013 – imagineNATIVE is excited to announce the recipients and presentation topics for the indigiTALKS Video Essay Project, an innovative new commission that will premiere at the 14th imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival in October 2013. Funded by the Ontario Arts Council, indigiTALKS challenges three Ontario-based Indigenous artists, curators, film buffs, and critical thinkers to each produce a 10-minute video essay and give a public presentation on a new thesis of artistic discourse in Indigenous-created film and video work. The three selected recipients are curators, filmmakers and educators with a history of critical and unique perspectives in their work. Wanda Nanibush (Anishinabe-kwe): Indigenous Film: Outsiders, Loveable Losers and Nerds – an entertaining and insightful celebration of the underdog, featuring landmark Indigenous films and the roles played by these memorable and necessary characters. Rachelle Dickenson (British, Irish, Cree): Indigenous Youth Screen Media – Next Generation Practice and Production – an investigation into the cultural and thematic perspectives found in youth-made digital media, their representations of identity and the methodology by which they are created within community organizations and the larger landscape of the Indigenous film movement. Ariel Smith (Cree/Ojibway/Roma/Jewish): This Video Essay Was Not Built On an Ancient Indian Burial Ground: Examining Horror Film Aesthetics within Indigenous Cinema – an eye-opening exploration of the link between colonialism and violence through a series of short films by Canadian Indigenous artists. “indigiTALKS is intended to expand the critical discussion of Indigenous Cinema in new and entertaining ways,” says Jason Ryle, Executive Director. “Through these video essays and informative, fun presentations, we hope that indigiTALKS educates and motivates film lovers to view and converse about Indigenous-made works in a new light.” indigiTALKS will premiere at imagineNATIVE in October 2013 with the selected participants giving a TED Talks-style presentation. Their accompanying 10-minute video essays (along with a written essay accompaniment) will then launch on imagineNATIVE’s website where they will be available for free. Programming time and date of the indigiTALKS Video Essay Project will be announced with the Festival line-up in September 2013. The indigiTALKS Video Essay Project is a commission by imagineNATIVE, produced with the support of Vtape and Big Soul Productions, and generously supported by the Ontario Arts Council. The Ontario Arts Council is an agency of the Government of Ontario. For more information, please contact: Sage Paul, [email protected]
